NEW YORK, N.Y. — In the midst of a busy summer schedule of recording and touring across the pond, J.D. & the Straight Shot are offering fans a taste of what’s to come with a new song debuting Tuesday, June 30, on WNYW-TV’s Good Day New York morning show. Titled “Better Find a Church,” the track drips with slinky swamp-blues and soul — the kind that might be right at home on the soundtrack of a supernatural show. JD and his band features guitarists Marc Copely and Aidan Dolan and violinist Erin Slaver, with contributions by bassist Byron House. All contribute to writing the acoustic band’s Americana-rooted songs. The alluring melody of “Better Find a Church,” sung as a beguiling duet on which Dolan’s baritone snakes under Slaver’s soprano, is filled with tasty touches — from House’s slapped upright bass to Copely’s Spanish guitar interlude — making for a worthy addition to any Americana playlist. “Erin came in with the original concept then we all worked on it,” says Dolan, noting his admiration for the rising Nashville singer/fiddler. “This song is a story of penance. It is one of the first that is produced by Rodney Crowell. He did a great job capturing our new sound.” As for the album, Dolan promises more luscious harmonies woven around rich stories and the same organic sound permeating “Better Find a Church.” Get ready to be converted. Better find a church seems like a very gospel inclined song. I am glad that there are artists out there that still make music according to their beliefs. Some of the musical enthusiasts nowadays tend to just become in line with this generation's taste. I am really looking forward to their new release. I hope that they become more known for their music and I am really excited for their future.
