(NASHVILLE, Tenn. Press Release) - Singer Jerry Schmitt pays tribute to the classic country music to which he grew up listening in Central Wisconsin, with his new album “Wishful Thinking” (Colt Records). “I have always loved traditional country music because of the storytelling and the lyrics,” he said. “Whenever I was feeling down or having relationship problems, those were the songs I listened to. This album is a tribute to some of my country music heroes like Buck Owens, Ray Price, Merle Haggard and others,” he said. Watch "Wishful Thinking" here https://youtu.be/IoWcsUXt9UE Tracks include “Tonight the Bottle Let Me Down” (Merle Haggard), “I Think I’ll Just Stay Here and Drink” (Haggard), “A Place to Fall Apart” (Haggard), “A-11” (Johnny Paycheck”), “After the Fire is Gone” (Loretta Lynn & Conway Twitty), “Same Ol’ Me” (Ray Price), “Love’s Gonna Live Here Again” (Buck Owens), “Wishful Thinking” (Wynn Stewart), “Walk Out Backwards” (Bill Anderson), “I Never Go Around Mirrors” (Lefty Frizzell) and “Till I Can Make it On My Own” (Tammy Wynette). “As far as I know, I am the first male singer to cover ‘Till I Can Make it On My Own’,” Schmitt said. “It’s one of the saddest songs ever, but it’s not just a woman’s song. It has really strong lyrics.”
Though based in Wisconsin, Schmitt records and performs often in Nashville, at some of the popular honkytonks along the Broadway strip. Through the years, he has also opened for artists like Joe Nichols, Lee Brice, Randy Houser, John Conley, Cross Canadian Ragweed, the Oak Ridge Boys, Lorrie Morgan, Danielle Peck, Merle Haggard and Joe Diffie. In 2007, he and his band, The 100 Miles Band, were named Wisconsin State Country Band Champions by the HODAG Country Music Festival. Though most songs on the album are classic covers, one track, “Please Make Up Your Mind,” is a Jerry Schmitt original. He considers it a tribute to Willie Nelson. “I wrote it years ago, when my sister was going through a difficult relationship,” Schmitt said. “I remember her saying, ‘This guy needs to make up his mind.’ I was listening to a Willie Nelson record at the time, and I started writing lyrics and music that sounded like Willie could have written them. When I was putting my new album together, I thought ‘Please Make Up Your Mind’ would be a perfect fit.” Jerry Schmitt and The 100 Miles Band will perform a free concert and party at Music City Bar & Grill, 2416 Music Valley Dr, Nashville, TN 37214, on Sunday, October 9, from 5:00-8:00 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. “Wishful Thinking” is available on CD Baby at https://www.cdbaby.com/cd/jerryschmitt2 and, soon, on iTunes and Amazon.
