Bri Murphy's upcoming LP Things We’d Rather Not Say is an antidote to the daily darkness we encounter, with the album's delicate melodies balanced by the intense honesty of its lyricism, Things We'd Rather Not Say allows the listener to experience the beauty of this poetic singer-songwriter.
Opting to record the project outside of Nashville in her home state of Wisconsin, Murphy notes, “There's a sort of shine here [Nashville] that's great, but it's not really me." So she settled into Pine Hollow studio in Eau Claire and turned to studio owner (and sound engineer for The National) Evan Middlesworth for co-production, and the result is a record teeming in a warmth that instills hope and love. Says Murphy about the hopes she has for the listener, "More than anything, I hope they find some pieces of the beauty, magic, and light we created up in the Northwoods when we were weaving these songs into a record, that they can carry with them through these strange and somewhat dark times.” ![]()
Today, TDC is incredibly pleased to share the album's first single, a desolate and expansive ballad led by somber pedal steel, organ, and Murphy's light as air, yet undeniably resolute, vocals which foster the spirit of a restless soul who wanders with purpose.
Murphy relays the story behind the track, '"Heart Like A Rock" is an anthem for those who refuse to settle. For me, this song started as a breakup song, but it evolved into something bigger. It's a song that tells the story of somebody constantly on the move, somebody who can't be held down, somebody who's always seeking higher ground and pushing boundaries. The minor key and 6/8 time signature paint an unsettled ground that builds gradually into the bridge, where the organ takes the role of the bird and flies away into the solo. The baritone guitar and pedal steel throughout keep the story moody and stormy all the way to the end.' Murphy moved to Nashville in 2011 and has since shared the stage with artists from Chris Stapleton to Tanya Tucker, and toured all over the U.S., Canada, and Japan as a fiddle player and background vocalist for other artists. She took a break from the road in late 2015 to pursue her solo career and released her debut record, Throw Down My Heart, in 2016, which saw the title track chosen as a semi-finalist in the International Songwriting Competition. An acoustic pop singer-songwriter from Mobile, Alabama, Eric Erdman has the soul of a troubadour, letting the listener in via his heartfelt vocals and well-crafted, poignant lyrics which allow one to both think and feel. Released on April 13th, his latest full-length, It’s Not Like You Don’t Know Me, contains eleven of Erdman's most personal tunes documented in a raw and minimalist context making them not only incredibly intimate and warm, but also, incredibly powerful.
Today, TDC is pleased to premiere the video for the album's tranquil title track, a sincere, somber reflection on the feelings of satisfaction and fulfillment that ensue when a connection is made between two people, whether it's a performer and an audience member or a potential paramour. "It's in the silence now that I find Whispered answers to a muted prayer You've learned by heart to read my mind Don't know why I feel surprised" Erdman relays the story behind the song, "I wrote “It’s Not Like You Don’t Know Me” with Tim Jackson and Lindsey Thompson. We were discussing how, as performers, we have all played less than optimal venues at times. You know the ones? 18 different football games on along the wall, the din of sonic clutter more than any PA could possibly overtake. These are places where it feels more like an obstacle than an opportunity to get heartfelt songs to land. Well, Lindsey, Tim, and I all noted how having even one solitary person in the audience who is fighting the good fight to hear the message from the stage despite all the distractions can feel like salvation. The bond that is formed between the performer and those select audience members can be so powerful and deep that it feels like they are lifelong friends even if they are there for the first time. So “It’s Not Like You Don’t Know Me” is a song about that connection with the audience." Enjoy, and share, the video above and for more information visit the links below. Landon states, “Birth Of A Song” is about the important role that mentors play in our lives: “I’ve been blessed to have some amazing mentors since I started this musical journey. People who took the time out of their busy lives to help a little kid with a big dream. The older I get, the more I realize just how important they are. The “Old Guitar Picker” in the song represents every one that took the time to help and encourage me along the way. I’m hoping that when people hear my song, they will be reminded of the mentors that may have played a role in their lives.” (Press Release) Hailing from Trinity, NC.
