I last spoke with singer-songwriter Kristi Hoopes in February after it was announced she won the Lyricord Songwriting Contest with her song “At Least It’s Something.” Now the young female singer is preparing to release her new single, “In My Own Sweet Time.” Kristi kindly took the time to speak about the track, and her plans for the summer. Since we last spoke, what has been going on with you professionally? Well, we're about to release a new single and we are starting to book summer shows. Hopefully I am going to get to play at CMA Fest this year at one of the little venues downtown and there will be more exciting things on the schedule! Summer is going to be a busy touring season, and I’m really excited about it. Your new single, “In My Own Sweet Time” will be released June 12th. What can you tell us about it? Did you write it? I did not. I was presented with five selections and out of those I chose “In My Own Sweet Time” and another song, “Goodnight Jesus,” by Don Schlitz. “In My Own Sweet Time” was written by Jessi Alexander, Jon Randall and Jennette McCurdy. When I heard the demo, I immediately loved it. It’s a fun summer song to play in the car and jam out to. It's also a great uplifting song that really hits home with me in the sense that I am following my dreams, and know that I will get where I want to be when I’m ready. I am going to the take the time and appreciate the things around me while I do. I hope when we release it everyone really likes it. How was the experience of recording a song that someone else had written?
It was interesting because everything that I had done in the studio up to this point had been written by me. It was a cool, new experience that I really enjoyed because when you find a good song that fits you it’s almost like you wrote it yourself and it just comes naturally. Previously, you had said that you had a tendency to write sad songs and your mom was encouraging you to write something more upbeat. “In My Own Sweet Time” really is an upbeat, radio friendly song with a positive message. It is. It’s very positive and really fits my personality. When I look for a song, I look for something that fits me, where I can convey the emotion and message. I was really glad that we were able to find an upbeat song so that my mom can get off my back about all of my sad ballads (laughing). Will there be a full length record or EP in the near future? We are in the beginning stages of making the album. Hopefully I will be heading to Nashville to work on it. I am also hoping to do a video for this song. Right now, we are looking to see who we would like to work with and figure out what to do with the song, so we will see how that goes. When you are out on the road this summer will your parents be with you? Yes, my Mom is my manager; she is always passing out cards and being my eyes and ears when I’m on stage. And my Dad is the roadie. He does the driving and gets the gear. His big dream is to drive a big tour bus, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed to make that happen!
