A fresh new face in music, Hannah May Allison grew up 30 minutes south of San Francisco listening to pop music, but she also developed a deep love of traditional country music through the influence of her mother, formerly a professional country singer who hails from Kansas. Hannah started singing and writing songs in high school and hasn’t stopped since. The Nashville-based artist, who began singing and writing songs in high school and has performed at venues like the Bluebird Cafe, recently released her celebratory new single and video "Stand Corrected," which nods to Nashville's burgeoning bachelorette scene. Here, Hannah answers her Essential 8 where she speaks about the song, finding inspiration everywhere, Patsy Cline, Hannah Montana, and more! Please choose one song and tell the story behind it. I’ll tell the story behind my new single “Stand Corrected”! The song was written by my two good friends Lauren McLamb and Casey Cattie. The song is about how a breakup with someone you thought was “the one” can make you believe that love is gone forever and that no one else out there can make you feel the way your ex did. But the crazy thing about love is that no matter how much you think you won’t be able to move on and find it again, it’ll prove you wrong. I just released the music video for the song on Friday, and the music video showcases the bachelorette scene that we have in Nashville! The video takes place on The Honky Tonk Express, which is an open-roof party bus popular with bachelorette parties coming to town. I also staged a fake bachelorette party with all of my songwriter girlfriends. It was hilarious and a lot of fun! Where do you draw inspiration from when writing? I find inspiration everywhere! Songwriting is a crazy thing because I feel like my mind doesn’t ever have an off switch. I’ll be in a conversation, at a movie, or even in line at the DMV and someone will say something interesting and my mind goes “Ohh! I gotta write that down!”. I keep all my ideas in my notes app on my iPhone. What’s the best advice to give to a musician just starting out? I think the most important advice I could give is to surround yourself with a network of people who support and believe in you. Especially living in Nashville, it’s easy to feel lost trying to make it in the music industry. It’s super important to surround yourself with like-minded people and build your network of friends in the music industry. You definitely can’t make it in the music industry alone. What are your “must have” albums for the road? Patsy Cline's greatest hits is always a must. I also listen to a lot of pop and rap music because I’ve been finding a lot of inspiration in other genres besides country music. I’ve been obsessed with Post Malone’s new album and can listen to it over and over again without getting sick of it! Favorite (or first) concert you have ever attended? This is so embarrassing, but one of my favorite first concerts was seeing Hannah Montana with my dad in the 6th grade. She played at this big arena near my hometown, and I remember being so in awe of seeing a girl not too much older than me at the time, singing in front of thousands of screaming fans. That was the first concert that really made me want to be a performer. Who would you love to collaborate with? I have so many people I would love to collaborate with. I think Alison Krauss would be on the top of my list. Her voice is probably my favorite female voice of all time, and she is someone I have looked up to since I was a little girl. Do you have a favorite thing to do on a day off? I’m passionate about fitness and being out doors. One of my favorite things to do when the weather is nice is to go for a hike or run one of the trails we have in Nashville. Is there a recent release you cannot stop listening to? “There’s No Way” by Lauv and Julia Micheals has been on repeat for the past few weeks. I think I’m going to do a country cover of it!
