Canadian Ashlynne Vince has been visiting Nashville since she was 15 years old. Over the past five years she has been a guest on stage at Tootsies, Rippys, Honky Tonk Central, Legends, George Jones Museum, The Bluebird Cafe, Douglas Corner, Nudies, The Palace, The General Jackson, The Stage, Wiskey Bent, and other popular Honky Tonks. Recently the singer-songwriter took the leap and moved to Nashville where she can be found daily at the world famous Tootsies Lounge. With the release of her new single, "Take Cover," Vince took the time to answer her Essential 8 and talk about road life, her dream venue, and much more! Did you have a musical mentor? If so, who was it and how did they influence you? Last year I was chosen by Brett Kissel (Canadian Country Male Vocalist 2016, 2017) to open for one of his shows on his Ice, Snow and 30 Below Tour….it was such a thrill….but more than that, HE was amazing! He had a handwritten card waiting for me in the changeroom, and his entire crew made me feel so welcomed. Brett is someone who works his butt off everyday, and deserves everything that has come his way. He’s dedicated to his family, team, fans, and of course his music. He’s humble, good, and kind….that’s the kind of artist I strive to be. Where do you draw inspiration from when writing? When I write, it comes from the heart because I like to write about things I am going through, my real life – joys, pains, goals, love – I can’t sing something if I don’t believe it. My current single, "Take Cover," was written as a result of a tough break-up and me finding the courage to pick up and move on. Music has the ability to empower, encourage, inspire, and reveal. I hope the lyrics to my songs are ones that other people can relate to and I hope it has the power to meet them where they are at. What’s your favorite food on the road?
Before I made the permanent move to Nashville, we made the 12-hour drive on a 7 week rotation for over 5 years….so I became an expert at road-tripping!! Must haves include energy drinks, and french-fries when we filled up for gas. If I was lucky, we would pull over and the gas station would have Cinnabon …that’s my guilty pleasure! What are your “must have” albums for the road? Although I’m a country artist, when I’m listening to music, odds are it’s going to be classic rock!!! I would be hard to beat at a “name that tune” challenge….I get that from my dad. How do you kill the long hours in the van? I’m not going to lie, I can sleep anywhere and the van is no exception! Thankfully no one wants me to be the driver, so it works out for all of us! Lol What has been your biggest struggle so far? I find having too much down-time really difficult. I get restless if I’m not busy and not doing what I love. Last year I had some health issues that affected my vocals and had to take more time off than I wanted to….waiting for everything to heal probably made me and everyone around me a little crazy!! Thankfully I’m back at full strength again, but it was a rough patch for me as a vocalist. What’s your dream venue and why? My dream venue is the Grand Ol’ Opry! To stand in the circle where so many greats have been would be an honour and something that I continue to work towards to make it a reality. My other dream venue would be Tootsies World Famous Wild Orchid Lounge – but that dream came true this September as I am one of their daily performers on Lower Broadway in Nashville. It’s unreal for me to think that the likes of Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Patsy Cline, and Waylon Jennings got their start at Tootsies!!! Favorite (or first) concert you have ever attended? Living in Nashville, there are no shortage of concerts! But I’d have to say that my all time favorite was hearing Brandi Carlile at the Ryman Auditorium. Her vocal style really influenced mine, and she’s been an artist that I have admired for a LONG TIME. It was honestly the most amazing concert I have ever attended. Website
