![]() Few things in life are as magical--or difficult--as finding the exact right formula for a musical outfit. But when Madison, WI-based trio Gin, Chocolate & Bottle Rockets got together for the first time in 2014, they discovered instant three-part harmony chemistry. Beth Kille, Shawndell Marks and Jen Farley put their diverse musical backgrounds and unique voices together, solidifying their individual talents into something even stronger. The trio -- which is often compared to such multi-part harmonizing powerhouses such as Wilson Phillips, Andrews Sisters and Wailin' Jennys--is poised to release its sophomore album, Lean, on June 1. Here, the group's Shawndell Marks answers her Essential 8 and talks the story behind Lean, songwriting, their go-to food on the road, vintage suitcases, and more! Is there a story behind your album’s title? We decided to take our album’s title from the track Lean, which has become our philosophy of life, leaning in to all of life’s joys and sufferings, whatever they may be in the present moment, whatever the truth is, even if it’s messy, “all the crime and the clutter in your head, all the fear and the longing left unsaid.” Do you write about personal experience, the experience of others, observations, made-up stories, something else or a combination? I generally write from personal experience but have also been inspired while eavesdropping at coffee shops or after reading powerful articles about our current state of political and social affairs. What’s the best advice to give to a musician just starting out?
When you’re just starting out, you think it’s going to be the big things that make a difference, but it’s really the little things you work at everyday that add up to making a difference. Keep showing up everyday, chip away at honing your creative skills, collaborating, social media presence, and booking gigs. Sometime the most progress is progress you only see in hindsight after taking care of the little things every day. Also, keeping your word, establishing trust, and being pleasant to work with go a long way in the music business. Relationships are key. What’s your favorite/”go-to” food on the road? EPIC brand chicken jerky, apples, and Larabars when I’m on a health kick. Lay’s potato chips, string cheese, and dove dark chocolate from the gas station when I need some comfort. Who would you love to collaborate with? Dolly Parton, Bonnie Raitt, and Sheryl Crow have been huge influences. Would LOVE to be locked in a room with any (or all!), see how their processes work, and learn. Dolly is such a fascinating character too - a mix of downhome conservatism while advocating diverse ways of living. Currently, I love the free-spirited nature, tone, and harmonies of First Aid Kit. Their real, raw, imperfect sounds are stunning. Which song of yours gets the best crowd response? "Be Your Own Superhero" from our EP has elicited a positive response from our fans. It started out with just a title, turned into a sort of anti-bullying theme song for kids, and has since morphed into a reminder to all humans of any age to recognize the superpowers within. The band has even developed a motivational speaking presentation based on the song. Do you have a favorite gift from a fan? I have an affinity for vintage suitcases. A fan’s mother had recently passed. He showed up to a gig carrying a vintage suitcase that belonged to her and sweetly handed it over. On the top, letter stickers spell her name ‘Orpha’. I never met Orpha, but apparently she had a zest for life and a convertible she’d take cross-country. The letter stickers will never be removed. It’s now used for band merch! Is there a recent release you cannot stop listening to? Yes! "No Roots" by Alice Merton. Love gypsy traveling type tunes, and this one hits the mark. It’s catchy as hell too. Can’t. Stop.
