At ten years old, Lexi Lauren started writing songs and playing the guitar, inspired by artists such Martina McBride, Kelsea Ballerini, Carrie Underwood, and Alessia Cara. Her 2017 debut single "Don't Text" was mixed by 3x Grammy winner Dave Clauss (Maren Morris, Keith Urban) and just last week, the singer-songwriter released her holiday single, "Hard Candy Christmas" which pays homage to Dolly Parton. Currently working on new music, Lauren took the time to answer her Essential 8 and talks songwriting, her first concert, and much more! Where do you draw inspiration from when writing your music? Honestly, I draw inspiration anywhere I can find it. Personal experiences, movies, books, other people’s lives, dreams, made up stories in my head, quotes or sayings… Every time I have a thought or an idea, I quickly write it down - then I’ll usually get into more depth with it later. When/where do you do your best writing? My creative brain definitely wakes up at night! I usually write the best songs around 1am lol. That said, I’ve also written during the day a lot as well. There’s just no way for me to control when the words come into my head! Weirdly, I’ve found the place I love to write most is in the car. I always get inspired watching the world slowly pass by through the windows. But otherwise, my bedroom is definitely my go to writing spot:) Do you write about personal experience, the experience of others, observations, made-up stories, something else or a combination? It’s definitely a combination! I feel like personal experience is the easiest way for me to write, since I’m the main character. You can really get deep with the lyrics when you’re writing about a personal story. But I also love writing from different perspectives and points of view. It’s fun to put yourself in a different character for a while and see what you can come up with. What’s the best advice you have ever gotten from another musician?
I chatted with TobyMac at the corner Starbucks in Downtown Franklin last year, and we started talking about music. He told me “Whether you become a music teacher at a school or an artist headlining a sold out tour, do it all for God. Even through the journey and the time it takes to get there. You just have to trust him and he will lead you in the right direction”. I look back at that moment all the time, and won’t ever forget the time he took out of his day to inspire me. What’s your dream venue and why? Oh my gosh, there are SO many places I can’t wait to perform at someday. My ultimate dream venue would be MSG! I feel like every musician has the dream to play there sometime in their life. It’s just such a special place. There are so many legends that have performed there - it’s a huge honor. Other than that, places like The Ryman and The Grand Ole Opry are on my bucket list for sure!! They both represent country music, and I love the history behind them both. Who would you love to collaborate with? I would love to do something with Martina McBride. She’s the person that inspired me to sing country music, and the way she writes music is SO unique and incredible. Plus, her voice is just freaking AMAZING;) Favorite (or first) concert you have ever attended? My favorite concert was actually the first concert I went to in Nashville. I attended Shawn Mendes at Bridgestone Arena last August and the entire show was amazing. Charlie Puth opened, Shawn put on an incredible show... The whole night was absolutely magical, I won’t ever forget it! Recent release you cannot stop listening to? I can’t get enough of Danielle Bradbery’s album! She just released it, like, two days ago - but I’ve probably listened to it 50 times already. For more information Website Spotify
