Originally from Pittsburgh, but now based out of Nashville, The Hobbs Sisters bring a dynamic combination of harmony-driven songs and high energy performance to the stage. On May 25th they released their latest EP, If It Wasn't Love, and here they answer their Essential 8 where they talk about the project, Martina McBride, the Grand Ole Opry, Sheetz, and more!
Is there a story behind your album’s title? Our new EP is called “If It Wasn’t Love” and that is also the title of the first track on the EP. As we were throwing around album title ideas we kept coming back to the idea of the importance of love. There are so many crazy things that we all do in life and many times we do it because of love. For us, we felt like the title “If It Wasn’t Love” was a great way to describe what we do as musicians and artists. Chasing our dream has been full of ups and downs but we never want to stop doing it because we love it! Why did you choose to anchor the album with the songs you did? We’ve been writing songs for this album for the last 2 years. Through that process we’ve tried to figure who we are as artists and think about how we want to sound, what we want to say and what we want people to get from a Hobbs Sisters album. These 5 songs that we chose to put on the EP truly showcase our sound and the direction we want our music to go. What’s the best advice to give to a musician just starting out? Enjoy every step of the journey. As a musician, your life is filled with exciting times and also with disappointing and hard times. There will be so many points along the way where you are unsure of what do to next or you feel like it isn’t working. Those are the times that you have to work harder, put yourself out there and keep on pushing. Working hard to make your dreams come true makes it all worth it. It’s fun to look back at where you’ve started and see how far you’ve come.
What’s your favorite/“go- to” food on the road?
When we are playing shows in Pennsylvania and the surrounding areas, our go to stop is always Sheetz, a gas station/fast food stop! It’s open 24 hours a day (perfect after a late night show!) and it’s known for their Made to Order option :) Where do you draw inspiration from when writing? We draw inspiration from so many places when writing. Sometimes it’s a personal experience that one of us is going through or maybe it’s a story we’ve heard from a family member or friend. We’ve written songs from ideas we got from reading books, watching TV or just listening to things that people say! For us that’s the fun part of writing: there are so many ideas waiting to be written! Who would you love to collaborate with? Growing up one of our favorite singers was always Martina McBride. We probably listened to her albums hundreds of times and sang along with them for days! It would be a dream come true to get to collaborate with her! Is there a recent release you can’t stop listening to? Right now we’ve been listening to the new Brothers Osborne album on repeat. There are so many well-written songs on it…one of our favorites is "Pushing Up Daisies (Love Alive)." Definitely recommend it! Is there a professional “bucket list” item you would love to check off? It’s always hard to pick just one item because there are so many goals we hope to achieve. One major “bucket list” item for us would have to be playing the Grand Ole Opry. It’s such a special place for country music and we would love to be on that stage someday! Website/Facebook/Twitter
