Held in Challis, Idaho in August, the Braun Brothers Reunion is three days of music featuring esteemed artists from the Texas, Americana and Red Dirt scenes. This year, the BBR will be held from August 11-13th and will feature sixteen plus artists, including William Clark Green, who is gearing up to release his first live album which was recorded this past January at Gruene Hall. Green kindly took the time to talk about playing his first BBR, the upcoming record and more. There are so many festivals in Texas alone, what made you want to venture to Idaho to play the BBR? I begged them to play the festival! I can’t remember exactly how it went down, but I have been wanting to play the BBR for a while and when they asked, I said I’d love to do it. I’ve been to Idaho before when we played Boise with Josh [Abbott] a few years, but never Challis. I’ve heard it’s a beautiful area and an amazing festival and we’re excited to play it. We play Thursday, so Friday and Saturday we have off and are going to stay, hang out and relax. I’m looking forward to it. The majority of the artists are well known in and around Texas. Is there anyone who is new to you or you are looking forward to seeing? I don’t know the lineup 100%, but I’m presuming if they’re playing that festival, I’m a big fan of theirs. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone. The BBR initially started out as a one-day event before turning into a three-day event. For the past few years, you have hosted a Street Party in Lubbock, is that something that you would like to see grow? I hope so. We had two thousand people for the last one, which is pretty awesome, and every year we have had to broaden the perimeter to let more people in, so eventually we’re going to run out of room - or hopefully we do - and then who knows what will happen. We’re trying to find ways to expand it including bringing in bigger acts as well as putting up and coming Lubbock bands on the bill, which is something that is extremely important to me. You recorded a live album at Gruene Hall in January. When is that looking to be released? We’re still working on the mixes right now but hopefully soon, before the summer is over. We aren’t 100% happy with where it is sonically and we’re not going to release it until it sounds perfect. Why did you choose Gruene Hall over other iconic venues like The Blue Light? Well, William Clark Green and Gruene Hall….it sounds pretty good. The Blue Light has been a huge staple in my career and was definitely on the short list, as was Cheatham Street. But Gruene Hall doesn’t let just anyone record a record there. They’ve only had Jerry Jeff Walker, Pat Green, Jack Ingram and Charlie and Bruce Robison. So when they gave us permission, we couldn’t pass it up. Honestly, it’s just a dream come true and something we knew would be really special. This isn’t going to be our only live record, though; we’re going to try and do a bunch more for sure. Ringling Road was released in 2015 and has seen three singles chart in Texas; will there be any more singles from the record? Right now, “Next Big Thing” is at radio and we’re going to release two more, “Creek Don’t Rise” and “Old Fashioned,” which will solidify the record. The next goal is to make another record - a great record. I’m writing for it now; a lot by myself, but also with people in Nashville and Texas. I’m trying to work really hard, taking a bit of a different approach and just being patient. I just want to make a record that’s different than what we’ve done in the past – not to the point where we piss people off, but definitely to the point where we throw something different out there. In addition to the BBR, what else does the Summer hold for you? Through the summer, it’s fair and festival season. After the BBR we are going out with Jonathan Tyler for a couple of runs, and then in September, we play Medicine Stone and Americana Fest, both for the first time. We’ve been trying to get on Americana Fest for a while and it finally happened this year so we’re very much looking forward to that. And Medicine Stone will be badass. It’s pretty heavy to be on that bill. We’re really excited.
