![]() Bluegrass Today premiered a track HERE CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Peter Rowan was just a young bluegrass boy when he caught the attention of Bill Monroe, who made him an actual Blue Grass Boy in 1963, or maybe ’64. Rowan isn’t certain exactly when he became the band’s guitarist and lead singer, but the moment Monroe introduced him to fellow icon Carter Stanley is etched in his memory just as indelibly as the inked entry in his 1966 diary. Within a few months, Stanley would be gone, but the impact he and his brother, Ralph, had on Rowan — and the world — would grow even stronger. He acknowledges their influence, and finally gives the story of that meeting a definitive telling, with his new Rebel Records album, Carter Stanley’s Eyes. Releasing on April 20, 2018, the album pays respects to bluegrass’s most famous brothers with two songs penned by each; others, such as the traditional “Hills of Roane County” and the Carter Family’s “Will You Miss Me,” were Stanley Brothers staples. Even the album’s opener, Rowan’s own “Drumbeats on the Watchtower,” nods to Ralph, who retitled it (from “Wild Geese Cry Again”) when he recorded it. Obviously, Rowan didn’t mind. In fact, he was ecstatic when Stanley told him he’d cut it. “To me, that was real fulfillment, to be covered by one of the masters,” he says.

![]() “I Want Your Trouble” on Soundcloud Secretear Zdan’s sophomore album, is a Spanish word for a confidential conversation or secret. It was co-produced by Zdan and Teddy Morgan (John Oates, Trace Adkins, Carl Broemel), featuring a rhythm section comprised of Haynes on drums and My Morning Jacket’s Tom Blankenship on bass and Carl Broemel on pedal steel and guitar. These new songs see Zdan stepping back into her rock roots and the music she grew up on (60’s and 70’s rock n roll). For this album Zdan shed a lot of her personal skin and musical past, letting go of those things that held her back from being the best version of herself. She really put everything on the line for this record and gave all of herself, so much so that she blew out her voice and ran her fingers raw from playing guitar the first week of recording. Songwriter, guitarist, bluesman, performer, and true original Chris Smither returns with his 18th album, and first studio recording of new originals in six years, with Call Me Lucky, which is available today, March 2nd. Smither and long-time producer and multi-instrumentalist David Goodrich, along with drummer Billy Conway, Matt Lorenz, and engineer Keith Gary, entered the studio to record ten songs and wound up with a double record featuring the eight originals and two covers they began with, as well as a second disc, which captures the same songs in very different arrangements.
At the core of Call Me Lucky are the ten tracks, from “Blame’s on Me” to “Lower the Humble” or "Nobody Home," which thoughtfully touch on the human condition. And today, TDC is pleased to share the video for one of those tunes, the bluegrass inspired “Change Your Mind” which finds Smither performing the reflective and insightful song solo acoustic in a picturesque vintage barn. Smither had this to say about recording the video, "When I was with Salt Stage videographer Jason Goodman shooting in this gorgeous barn in Leverett, Massachusetts, the sky and the air and the birds were just right. I'm not sure what prompted me to play this one but I'm sure glad we got this one on video." Hayley McKay is back with a bang after capturing audiences through both her live performances and her high quality produced tracks. After the success of her two previous singles, ‘Unspoken’ and ‘Bottom Of My Heart’, Hayley has been recognised by the likes of Maverick, Elmore Magazine, throughout BBC Radio including Introducing Tees ‘Artist of the Week’ and Bob Harris’ Under the Apple Tree sessions. With performances in Nashville, Glastonbury, SummerTyne Americana as well as supporting iconic artists such as Albert Lee, Skip McDonald, Scouting For Girls, Tom Jones and Martha Reeves – it’s clear that Hayley is one to look out for in 2018… The majority of the tracks are written or co-written by Hayley proving there’s far more to her than just an amazing voice. Haunting ballads, such as Ghosted and Don’t Give Up On Me, are supported by gentle acoustic numbers like You’re A Song and Matching Suitcase. And there’s also an element of folk in another co-write - Following The Sun. The lead track, Catching Fire - another country/rock track that found its way to her from Nashville - also deserves an honourable mention for the manner in which it opens the door to what is to come. The new single, Chance To Change, is a mix of all of these styles. Penned by Irish writers Aoibheann Carey Philpott and Joe Carey Jnr, it’s a mid-tempo, lilting song with a Fleetwood Mac vibe that confirms Hayley to be a true, all-round country artist with a style all of her very own. “Every song shows off a different element of my voice and my producer, Matt Parisi, has really delivered an amazing sound with Geoff Pesche at Abbey Road adding his own special magic. I’m so proud of this album and I really hope everyone will love it as much as I do”. – Hayley Mckay www.hayleymckay.co.uk www.facebook.com/hayleymckaymusic www.youtube.com/user/HayleyMcKay www.twitter.com/mckay_hayley
With her second full-length album, Forever (released on February 16th), Arkansas-native Bonnie Montgomery beautifully recalls the golden age of country western music, capturing the stories and melodies that music lovers today still yearn for.
Recorded in Austin at Dale Watson’s Ameripolitan Studios, Forever, a concept album inspired by Willie Nelson’s Phases and Stages, focuses on life on the road, loss, and the mysticism of West Texas in its eleven-tracks that are both traditional and timeless. Today, TDC is pleased to share one of those tunes, "Alleyways and Castles." Led by some fast-paced pickin', a frisky fiddle, and Montgomery's distinctive vocals, the lively "Alleyways and Castles" deals with coming to terms with the realities and the joys of the road - something that Montgomery, who has toured with Shovels and Rope, Hayes Carll, Billy Jo Shaver, Turnpike Troubadours, and Mike and the Moonpies among others, surely knows something about. Montgomery had this to say about the song, "Alleyways is about the weary mornings and blissful nights on the country music highway, and passin' through Texarkana with a brand new plan.” Stream, and share, the track above.
