To shoot the video for "Freedom Feels Like" the band once again turned to Peter Doucette, who directed their "The Whiskey'll Miss Me" video. Scenic Devil's Lake, WI was chosen to provide the backdrop for Doucette to create the video's soaring visual images utilizing multiple cameras, including a drone mounted camera. It kicks off with the title song, a straight-ahead rocker, loaded with swagger and lyrics that call out native GA locales featuring a nod to the S.E. Hinton novel (and later, a Coppola film), The Outsiders. The lead single "East Coast Girl" and "Mexican Coke" are inspired by Walker's move to Los Angeles, the former effectively combining an anthemic chorus with spoken verses, recorded conversationally on an iPhone. The writerly eye for detail is apparent in one of Stay Gold's standout tracks, "Wilder In The Heart", describing an airport meeting with a girlfriend. Overall, Stay Gold is clearly Walker's most articulate to date. (Press Release) Ruby Dee’s is a tale of unbelievable resilience and drive in the face of struggles that would foil someone with less determination. She is a singer, songwriter, bandleader, and cook as well as a traumatic brain injury survivor. Her band, Ruby Dee & the Snakehandlers make American music with rockabilly, swing, country and R&B inflections, and their latest album, Little Black Heart is a tour de force of exemplary musicianship. The album will be released July 22nd on Catty Town Records, a new imprint from a group of promoters devoted to American roots music.
The band will celebrate the release with a show at the Continental Club in Austin on July 23rd, with a full Australian tour on the books for August. Ruby wrote every song on the album, with the exception of a Jack Scott chestnut that was a favorite of the band. This is amazing in itself, considering the aftermath of a terrible accident that left her with significant brain damage. Eight years ago, she was involved in a scooter accident that left her with sunglasses implanted in her forehead, a traumatic brain injury and other trauma. In previous years, aside from singing and writing songs for the Snakehandlers, she had owned and operated 3 restaurants in Seattle, quite successfully. Her trauma left her with vertigo, memory loss, nausea, mental confusion and language challenges. “I could picture an image in my mind, but couldn’t think of the word. NASHVILLE, Tenn. — As excited as Dave Colemanis about the August 19, 2016 release of Pushed to the Side (Vaskaleedez Records), the fifth full-length album by his Nashville roots-rock trio the Coal Men, he’s also harboring an unusual fear: that the story of “three solid dudes trying to make really honest, genuine music” isn’t sexy enough to pique journalists’ fancy. Please, Mr. Coleman, have a little faith. Truth is, there are plenty of angles here, including several in these excellent songs (which we shall explore in a bit, perhaps starting with the sad electric twang of “Faithless Eyes”). But it’s not as if the Coal Men’s history lacks for hooks. For starters, guitarist/vocalist Coleman and co-founding drummer/vocalist Dave Ray have been together 17 years; Coleman’s also played with artists including Matthew Ryan, Jessi Alexander and a young Taylor Swift. Bassist Paul Slivka, who joined five years ago, gained fame with Tommy Conwell & the Young Rumblers; he’s worked with Tony Joe White, Tommy Womack, Amanda Shires and Elizabeth Cook, among others. Most Tuesdays, he appears at the Family Wash with his wife, Cole, host of the “Short Sets” songwriter series. Coleman’s a regular.
