 Iconic Newfoundland singer-songwriter, best-selling author, actor and recent recipient of the Order of Canada, Alan Doyle released his third solo album, A Week at The Warehouse today (October 13th) via Universal Music Canada.
A Week at The Warehouse was recorded live off the floor with Doyle’s band and legendary producer Bob Rock at the helm. The album is chock-a-block with country-tinged, radio-ready tunes that carry Doyle’s signature blend of traditional and modern flavors. Rock’s own band, Payola$, is celebrated with a cover of “Forever Light Will Shine” – which includes a guest vocal from none other than Paul Hyde. The album’s first single, the call to the campfire salvo “Summer Summer Night” was released in June of this year, with a second to follow. In August, the Hall of Fame announced the names of 7 honorees for the Friday, October 27 Induction Ceremony, which bring the total Hall of Fame roster to 67. They include Sun Records icon and member of the original Class of ’55, Roy Orbison, Booker T. Washington alum and co-founder of the supergroup Earth, Wind & Fire, Maurice White, prolific Stax and Hi Records horn section, The Memphis Horns, father of Memphis guitar blues, Frank Stokes, gospel singer and songwriter, Cassietta George; Sun Records performer and producer who later had a huge influence on Nashville’s country music scene, “Cowboy” Jack Clement, and artist manager and civil rights lawyer who also helped start the Beale Street Music Festival 40 years ago, Irvin Salky. John Prine will be performing and participating in the induction of longtime friend “Cowboy” Jack Clement. Bootsy Collins will participate in the induction of Maurice White. Maria Maldaur will be performing and honoring Frank Stokes. The Memphis Music Hall of Fame is also looking forward to the Memphis return of Valerie June, who will be performing in a raucous tribute to Roy Orbison. -NPR Music This morning, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation announced that singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Rhiannon Giddens has been named a MacArthur Fellow. The MacArthur Fellowship, often referred to as a “genius grant,” offers an unrestricted $625,000 grant, distributed over five years, to, in the Foundation’s words, “individuals who show exceptional creativity in their work and the prospect for still more in the future. Giddens said of being awarded the Fellowship: “I am just thrilled! So many things I want to do - but the first thing is to thank whoever nominated and supported me for this grant - it means the world to me, and to the projects I have been longing to do”, and added in an interview with her home town paper, North Carolina’s News & Observer, “it’s gonna let me live a little bit. I’ll be able to pursue some things while not having to stay on the road so much to keep the lights on.
