Australian music icon Russell Morris will be making his U.S. festival debut at the Americana Music Festival. In addition to his official showcase on Saturday 9/24 Russell will performing three additional shows during the festival. Morris will be at the Americana Music Fest playing songs off of his award winning album Sharkmouth, that will be released in the U.S. on September 30th. Stream the First Single “Black Dog Blues” via SOUNDCLOUD Morris got a fast start in music. At barely 21 years of age he recorded "The Real Thing," a psychedelic rock single that climbed its way to the top of the Australian charts in 1969. It became the continent's biggest song that year, earning airplay in U.S. markets like Chicago and New York along the way. More hits followed, and Russell moved to Los Angeles in the 1970s, looking to continue his success on U.S. soil.
Things didn't go as planned, and the more he tried the doors seemed to close on him. Despite his success in Australia, Morris was unable to gain a foothold in the American market. He eventually headed back to Melbourne and took an extended break from the public eye. Upon his return to music, Morris decided to switch gears and abandon the type of music that lead to his initial success and get back to his roots, and crafting an album influenced by the music he grew up listening to - American blues and roots artists like John Lee Hooker, Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters. The result was Sharkmouth - a bold delivery of material loosely based on Australia’s most iconic characters and untold stories and events spanning from 1916 on. Upon it’s release in Australia Sharkmouth reached #1 on the iTunes Blues Charts, #1 on the Australian Blues Radio Charts, Russell received the ARIA award for Best Blues and Roots album and Sharkmouth went on to be the highest selling record of the year. Morris is thrilled to be releasing Sharkmouth in America and bringing his Australian roots to the country that was the breeding ground for his musical influences. Morri is fascinated by history, and is particularly excited to be playing in Nashville, a city rich in musical history - among some of the best artists in the Americana music scene. “Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined to be playing on the Americana Music Festival, especially at this point in my career. I am incredible honored to be playing among such incredible line up of artists,” says Morris.
