Nashville, TN (December 8, 2015) - 2015 has been an banner year for Doug Seegers, following the release of his acclaimed solo debut, Going Down To The River, last October. Seegers received tremendous accolades in the press, including features on NPR’s Morning Edition and On Point with Tom Ashbook, and in-depth profiles in the Wall Street Journal and People. Other highlights include multiple sold-out tours of Scandinavia, a triumphant performance at the 2015 Americana Honors & Awards, and most recently, a Nashville/Midsouth Regional Emmy Award nomination. Seegers and Jerry L. Walker received the nomination at The Nashville/Midsouth Chapter of The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) last month for the Community/Public Service (PSA) they created for the Nashville Rescue Mission. The spot, titled "Home for Christmas" aired on Nashville’s WTVF Channel 5. Seegers’ work with the Nashville Rescue Mission will come as no surprise to those who are familiar with his not-so-typical Music City story. Seegers was a frequently homeless, 62-year-old singer-songwriter-guitarist when he was discovered at a Nashville food pantry by a Swedish country music star, who helped him from the streets to superstardom in a country best known for global pop superstars Abba. Seegers' remarkable debut album, Going Down To The River, is a fully realized version of the music he has been making on Nashville streets for decades, with plenty of time also spent among the buskers who open guitar cases and sing for tips in Nashville’s neonlit Lower Broadway tourist district. During his self-reclamation, Seegers received encouragement (and food and guitar strings) from Stacy Downey, who runs “The Little Pantry That Could,” a charity serving the needy in West Nashville.
Seegers says, "As a member of the Nashville community and someone who has struggled with homelessness and addiction, it was such an honor to participate in the Nashville Rescue Mission's PSA for, 'Home For Christmas.' This felt like the perfect opportunity to repay this great organization for all of the love and support they've shown myself and others over the years and to spread the word about this great cause." The 30th Emmy® Awards will be a live telecast at the Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum onFebruary 27, 2016. Watch the full PSA here. Seegers continues to tour in support of Going Down to the River. Writing about the album, Rolling Stone Country’s Melinda Newman said, “Going Down to the River is Seegers' life laid bare — full of heartache, hope, humor and, above all, truth.” While Stuart Munro of the Boston Globe proclaimed the album “Marvelous, unvarnished country music." It was announced today that he Seegers will his first appearance at the legendary MerleFest in 2016. More dates to be announced soon. www.dougseegersmusic.com | www.facebook.com/dougseegersofficial
