At ten years old Lexi Lauren began writing songs on her guitar and knew that music was more than a hobby. In 2017, she started posting videos of her singing on Musical.ly and gained over 150k followers in less than 75 days. Now, Lexi is ready to release her debut original song and music video, "Don't Text." The song, which Lexi co-wrote, was mixed by Grammy winner Dave Clauss (Maren Morris, Keith Urban, and Justin Bieber.) and focuses on the importance of real communication in a relationship. Watch the video for "Don't Text" below then read the interview with Lexi where she talks about her roots, the single, and more! "Don't Text" will appear on Lexi's upcoming debut EP set for a release later this year. Just a few years ago, when you were ten years old you started writing songs and playing guitar. Did you know then, at such a young age, that you wanted to pursue music as a profession?
Who do see as musical inspirations for singing and playing either in the country or pop (or any other) genre? My biggest musical inspirations in country music are Kelsea Ballerini, Taylor Swift, and Martina McBride. I really love the stories behind Martina's music. They always make me get really emotional. Alessia Cara and Ed Sheeran are two artists in the pop industry that I really admire as well. Recently you released your new, original song. Can you tell the story behind "Don't Text?" The meaning behind "Don't Text" is how important real communication is. Hearing someone's voice is so much better than just texting them constantly. In person or over the phone communication is something that has become super unusual these past years, and it's a necessary part of any relationship. I was so excited to be able to release a song with such an unusual meaning. The video is premiering today. Was this your first video and if so can you describe your feelings around that? It actually was my very first video, so everything felt extremely new to me. The process was different than anything I've ever done. I had SO much fun on set, and learned so much. It definitely was an awesome experience, and I can't wait to shoot more music videos in the future! Many young people, and older too, get nervous when they have to stand in front of so many people. Do you enjoy playing music live and do you ever experience stage fright? Live music is such a magical thing. There's nothing like it. I love singing and playing in front of an audience; that being said, I almost always get a little bit of stage fright before a performance. After I play the first song, the nerves start to slowly fade away. By the end of the performance, I don't even remember that I had nerves at the beginning. I think it's totally normal to have stage fright. Everyone gets nervous when they do something out of their comfort zone. If you had one professional wish for either the year or your career which is just beginning, what would it be? A wish for my career would just be to create music that people love and can relate to. Whenever I hear a song that makes me feel a certain way, it's such a surreal moment. Music is so special to me, and I can't imagine my life without it. It's such a cool way to let out your emotions, and when people can connect with a song you wrote, it's such an amazing feeling. Finally, do you have a current guilty pleasure song you can share? I wouldn't call it a guilty pleasure, but one song I have on repeat right now is "Every Little Thing" by Carly Pearce. It's SUCH an amazing song, and I'm absolutely obsessed with it!
