![]() Nashville, TN (Press Release) - Wendigo, the masterful new album from acclaimed duo Penny & Sparrow is set for a September 1st release on I Love You. Wendigo features an artfully arranged collection of 14 songs that combine the literary inspired poignant lyrics of Andy Baxter with the lush arrangements of Kyle Jahnke. The duo’s memorable harmony style combined with their captivating live performances have resonated with both the press and audiences. Penny & Sparrow’s break-through release Let A Lover Drown You (2015) was met with critical acclaim from a wide variety of outlets including NPR Music, Noisey, American Songwriter and Baeble Music. Baxter & Jahnke, who began making music together in 2010 while roommates at the University of Texas in Austin, independently released two albums and one EP before teaming up with John Paul White (Civil Wars) and Ben Tanner (Alabama Shakes) to produce the previous album. Building on their signature soaring harmonies and introspective lyrics, Penny & Sparrow expand their musical palette both poetically and sonically via their hypnotic arrangements on the new album. Baxter delves into themes of love, darkness, urban legends (“Wendigo”) and an ambitious trilogy of songs featuring an unusual take on humanizing the Grim Reaper (“Part 1 Visiting”, “Part 2 Smitten” and “Part 2 Moniker”). Throughout the album is an underlying theme of unearthing fear, and discovering the unexpected beauty, strength and hope that lies within.
Wendigo started as a collection of demos, written and recorded in Baxter & Jahnke’s home studio in northern Alabama. The duo ended up falling in love with the simplicity of what they’d created, peppered with the sounds of home…cooking, door hinges, and interactions with their families. Rejoined with longtime producer/engineer Chris Jacobie, Wendigo was completed at his home studio in San Antonio, TX. Penny & Sparrow have the unique ability to turn their performances into special experiences, making even a large venue feel like a cozy listening room. On Wendigo, the acclaimed duo has clearly upped the bar without sacrificing the deep reaching honesty that has connected with listeners.
