Singer-songwriter Eliot Bronson, who has won first-place honors at both MerleFest’s Chris Austin Songwriting Contest and Eddie Owens Presents “Songwriter Shootout,” is gearing up for the August 25th release of his new album, James. The eight track collection, produced by Dave Cobb, offers songs that are similar to snapshots - capturing moments, yet often revealing something deeper. One such song, “The Mountain,” is a mid-tempo ballad whose grandeur delivers a powerful message, but ultimately leaves it to the listener to decipher its meaning.
"I’m taking these chains off of me I’m gonna climb up where I can see I’m gonna get ready for the mountain Been carrying more than my share Circling roads that go nowhere I’m gonna get ready for the mountain" Bronson says of the song's origins, "It came out of a particularly difficult year. I really don't have the stomach for the level of nonsense that the music industry often demands. There's a big part of me that wants to quit the game and go live in a Himalayan cave. It's about that longing to walk away from all the BS. I think a lot of people probably feel that way sometimes."
Led by Bronson's honest vocals and a spacious melody, "The Mountain" was a song that was fairly easy to record. Bronson notes, "We recorded this whole record "live" in the studio - everyone playing together. We probably did 5 or 6 takes and just used the best one. It was all very organic and real."
He further adds, "I try to make art....I try not to get too caught in any fixed ideas of who I am, as and artist or otherwise. I've found that my best and most interesting works comes when I surprise myself. Sometimes when I'm writing a song I feel like it already exists somehow, and I'm just the first one who gets to hear it." With the album release drawing near, Bronson finds himself preparing for a busy Summer and Fall saying, "I'll definitely be touring all over on this new recording, starting with the East Coast in September and October. Always writing new songs. I'm working on a TV script with another songwriter. Staying busy. Anything can happen." TDC is proud to premiere "The Mountain," above.
