Born into a musical family, multi-instrumentalist and visual artist Heather Taylor is creative to her core. Classically trained in flute, the now Asheville, NC resident embraces the soul of Appalachian folk while drawing elements of blues, Americana, roots and rock into her songwriting.
In August, Taylor will release her new album, Undercurrents, and today TDC is thrilled to premiere the lead single from the project, "Up On A Mountain." Inspired by the rich storytelling culture of Appalachia, "Up On A Mountain" is an expansive ode to preservation that shines an introspective light on taking a deeper look at one's self, surroundings, and relationships to forge beneficial, lasting connections. Taylor shares, "Up On A Mountain helps me look at a certain heaviness around life in a somewhat playful and hopeful way. The song was influenced and combined with a tune called 'Well, Well Well' which was written by Danny O'Keefe and Bob Dylan. They gave me a steady platform & an inspiration to emphasize important messages that continue to hold value. I'll leave it up to the listener to interpret, but I aim to support digging deeper in relationships with ourselves, with others, as well as with our environment." Listen, and share, "Up On A Mountain" below, then read on to learn more about Heather.
After graduating from The Crane School of Music, Taylor’s musical path appeared to unravel. To remedy her indecisive future, she traveled to Ireland where she found an Irish flute in a Dublin music shop. In a sweep of synchronicity, Taylor found herself playing flute in venues across Ireland and Scotland. Upon returning to the States with her musical fire reignited, Taylor experimented with new forms of musical expression; she began singing, playing mandolin and writing songs - ultimately becoming an Americana force in her hometown of Rochester, NY.
Later, Taylor relocated to Asheville and shortly thereafter, won the Brown Bag Songwriting Competition. She then began working on Undercurrents, which was tracked live at Echo Mountain Recording Studios to best capture the organic and textural qualities of Taylor’s songwriting. Due in August, Undercurrents features Heather Taylor (vocals/octave mandolin), Sean Jerome (slide guitar), and Grammy Award winning producer Julian Dreyer (engineering/mixing).
