Almost a month since the release of their eponymous fifth album, The Dustbowl Revival has been crossing the country spreading their gospel of grooves via their energizing live shows. The eight-piece's well-received latest outing features eleven dynamic tracks including "The Story," a Stax-style tale of two lovers that is dominated by bright horns and harmonies. The band takes you behind the scenes of "The Story" with this exclusive footage, recorded by Ben Guzman, that captures them in the studio together for the first time with producer Ted Hutt. Get a peek at the recording process as you watch the video below, then read on as Zach Lupetin discusses the magic (and panic) of recording and making the song shine. "We had ten days or so to get it right in the studio - and no matter how you prepare (we had a full month to rehearse and arrange the eleven songs we recorded) there is always some spontaneous magic (and panic) that happens when you put eight people and a producer in a small space with limited time to work. Sometimes it's those moments of panic (magic?) that force you to reach deeper.
Vocally for me it was those times when I was spent, at a loss for new ideas, almost hoarse, feeling trapped in that booth alone, that I could finally forget about everything and really lean into the song, all feeling, no thinking. When we recorded "The Story" Ted had Liz and I stop listening to each other to harmonize, to stop trying to aim perfectly to match (like synchronized swimmers) and instead fly into the dark on our own, feeling the anxiety and hope of a long-simmering love affair finally coming to fruition. The joy of the group vocal too is something that has to be wrangled just so - and I think while we don't sing it perfect, the emotional imperfection is what can make it shine brightest.” -—Zach Lupetin of Dustbowl Revival
