On his debut LP Scattered Poems (11.16), Alex Dunn stakes his claim as the latest in a long line of hard-worn men and women making American music in the northernmost port of Seattle. Written over the past five to six years, primarily in the quiet moments on a commercial fishing vessel in Alaskan waters, Scattered Poems is filled with reflections on the many iterations of that primary emotion: love. “As cliché as it may sound, the overarching theme of this record is love” says Dunn. “Each song might be its own story, but it always comes down to love; love for my mother, for my grandmother, love for my family. Love for lovers, unrequited love, and love purely for this simple chance at existence. As my mother always said, ‘to love and be loved is all there really is’ (which is now engraved on my guitar strap.)”
Today, TDC is honored to share the premiere of "Colorado Line" whose charming acoustic introduction leads into a banjo and fiddle led sentimental tale of love and atonement that chugs onward with a sweetly noble intention, propelled by love and redemption. "I find myself at the end of the day staring out the window of the car I don't know the man behind the wheel, but he said he'd take me far I don't care as long as we make the Colorado Line by night That'll give me time to prepare myself for a fight I must fight"
Dunn shares the story behind the song,
"A few years ago, I was driving home to Fort Collins, Colorado to see my family and friends late one afternoon, after spending a long winter alone in southern Wyoming. As the spring sun was setting behind me, out above the Snowy Range, I was filled with the excitement of anticipation. I was starving for human interaction, for connection. I pulled over to watch the dying light fade across the vast rolling plains towards the Colorado border and these feelings began to manifest themselves in the lyrics of this song. I quickly had the words and melody of a tale of love, yearning, and redemption. All the while home I sang Colorado Line over and over and I could hear the faint nostalgia of fiddle and banjo, with rolling drums and bass carrying me forward." Imbued with a sense of place and time, "Colorado Line" is universal, tender, and timeless. ***Retweet or Comment below to Win A Pair of Tix to the Show!!*** Sawyer Fredericks and Parsonsfield team up for a dynamic co-bill at NYC's Gramercy Theatre this Thursday, October 25th at 8pm. Touring behind his sophomore outing, Hide Your Ghost, Fredericks delivers an honest, somber collection of tunes demonstrating his growth and skill as a modern day storyteller with a wisdom beyond his years. Incorporating elements of blues, roots rock, and jazz with live instrumental arrangements throughout, the album was largely recorded to analog tape, with an old-school approach to production, in the unparalleled acoustics of the cathedral hall of the converted 1896 St. John’s Church, now home to Dreamland Recording Studios in Woodstock, NY. The 11 songs tell intense stories of personal, domestic, and social conflict, both timely and timeless, fearlessly embodying both the ugliness and beauty of being human. “Hide Your Ghost is an album that I feel truly represents who I am as an artist and I’m excited to be sharing these new songs while touring with my band, the same musicians that helped bring those songs to life in the studio,” remarks Sawyer. (October 19, 2018) – Nashville-based singer/songwriter Tom Mackell hails from Philadelphia and debuts a unique sound resembling a cross between outlaw country and Americana. Today, he releases his latest single “Hannah” - the first single from a forthcoming E.P. slated for early 2019. The single can be streamed or downloaded here. “I’m in trouble with the law man, and broke as hell,” Mackell reveals after only one chord has been strummed on his new single “Hannah.” Fusing elements of classic Americana and outlaw country revival with youthful sincerity, "Hannah" explores an old country adage through the lens of a millennial songwriter. Eli Paperboy Reed’s Debut Album 'Roll With You' 10th Anniversary Deluxe Edition out November 2310/22/2018 In 2008, Boston-born, Brooklyn-based soul singer Eli Paperboy Reed released his debut album, Roll With You, to critical acclaim. To mark its 10th anniversary, Yep Roc Records will release a deluxe remastered edition November 23. Available on CD, and for the first time on LP, the deluxe edition features the 11 original tracks, 12 previously unreleased tracks, and exclusive content. (Nashville, Tenn. -- October 19, 2018) First cousins Bryan Russo and Christopher Shearer, who make up the uniquely unforeseen Americana duo, Boys Called Susan, share the inspiration behind their first single to radio "Company Man" (click here) as it hits airwaves ahead or their debut album Pennsyltucky on Friday, October 26th. The eleven track masterpiece is available for pre-order now. "'Company Man' is an upbeat anthem that was inspired by my father, my father-in-law, and many of the people I met throughout my childhood who did what was necessary to put food on the table, even though it’s obvious that their professions are not what they truly wanted to do," said Russo. "It's a tip of the hat to all blue collar workers." Chicago, IL— Billboard has exclusively debuted the new music video by Chicago band the Claudettes. Created by noted Brooklyn photographer/artist Kate Stone, the "Taco Night Material" video was made using stop-motion animation and photographic cut-outs in a diorama-like set. It was entirely made by hand with no digital manipulation, and took about eight hours to animate every 30 seconds of footage. See the incredibly creative video here. The song is the confession of a woman who finds herself trapped in an oppressive marriage. Facing a future of agonizingly domestic "Taco-Night Tuesdays," she chooses murder over a life of never-ending wifely responsibilities. It's a women's empowerment anthem (well suited to the current national discussion about women's rights) that doubles as a "killer" Halloween cut. The imagery in the video references 16th-century vanitas paintings, but here the still lives are not still. It’s a fast-paced, surreal romp with murder, intrigue, skeletons, bugs, rotting taco meat, singing appliances and, slimiest of all, fetid old gender roles. The track "Taco Night Material" was recorded with Grammy-winning producer Mark Neill (the Black Keys, Old 97's) at his Soil of the South studio in Valdosta, Georgia, and released on the Claudettes' spring 2018 album DANCE SCANDAL AT THE GYMNASIUM! (Yellow Dog Records). Currently, the Claudettes are already recording a new album with another Grammy-winning producer, Ted Hutt (Old Crow Medicine Show, The Devil Makes Three, Gaslight Anthem). The new single - produced by Tommy McLaughlin (Villagers, SOAK) - is accompanied by B-side, ‘Pieces’ and follows shows earlier this year at The Great Escape, Kansas Smitty’s and Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen. Stream ‘The Kindest Thing’ here: https://keeva.lnk.to/thekindestthing. For London-based, half-Jordanian half-Irish Keeva, ’The Kindest Thing’ sprang from the rawest of betrayals, following the end of a long-term relationship dominated by infidelities. “When it ended,” says Keeva; “I realised the kindest thing he ever did for me was to leave. It’s a very reflective song and I feel pain and sadness for my past self who lived through that, as I'm sure many others can relate to. Thankfully the pain has subsided and I’m in a far better place now.” The bruised source material is tempered with a self-aware sense of humour - Keeva shrugs off the writing of ‘The Kindest Thing’ in a single voice memo whilst lying on her bathroom floor as “The single most stereotypically heartbroken thing I’ve ever said! But to write the song was necessary, cathartic, and I'm very happy with how it all came together in the studio.” Emerging with ‘Whiskey’ in late 2017, Keeva’s sound is borne out in the truly timeless quality of ‘Four Sad Songs and a Ballad’. Inspired by several generations of poets, playwrights and musicians in her own family - Keeva’s debut EP is vulnerable, assured, warm and unashamedly honest. ‘Four Sad Songs and a Ballad’ 1. The Wild Feathers debuted an acoustic version of their song “No Man’s Land” via Rolling Stone Country, who say the song “highlights the harmonies of Taylor Burns, Ricky Young and Joel King. The result is a breezy, unforced ode to a back-to-basics existence, captured with nothing more than two microphones.” The group taped the song at Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium and Joel King of the band adds: “This song represents the idea of returning to a simple life and getting away from the things that get in the way of true happiness. We wrote it on acoustic guitars and it felt fitting to play the song in its purest form at the Ryman - a place we have all escaped to many times as fans.” Watch the acoustic version of “No Man’s Land” via Rolling Stone Country here. |
