The story of NYC-based indie-rock band Little Person can be broken down succinctly around the number two. The project of twin brothers and multi-instrumentalists Max and Nicky Weinbach, Little Person continues to draw inspiration from legendary songwriting talents like Burt Bacharach (alliteration!) following a change of coasts from the Bay Area to the Big Apple.
Both Weinbach brothers started their careers in musical theater, still putting on a throwback-style variety show from time to time, but it was their mutual love of classic 1960’s pop records that led them down their current path. Forming in 2013, Little Person released an acclaimed, self-titled EP and contemplated their next move leading to, well, a move! Now firmly planted in New York, the band is following up on their I Feel Fine EP with a new standalone single, the tender ballad, "I'm Happy to Be With You." Releasing November 30th, Sunset Avenue Sessions, combines the award-winning talents of singer-songwriters Michael Logen, Lizanne Knott, and Jesse Terry, with each artist trading off vocal duties with an easy feeling of camaraderie on eleven tracks which include originals as well as carefully selected covers.
While the three are separate in their sound and focus, the decision to record as a trio bounded directly from their years of friendship and the many shows they’ve played together. “Working with Lizanne and Michael always inspires me, stretches me out musically and makes me want to explore new roads in my own songwriting, Terry explains. “We're all very different artists, but there is a great synergy when we come together.” The choice of covers included on the album is an invitation into the American songbook exposing to fans their wide range of influences and interests across genres. Lead track “Learning to Fly,” by the late Tom Petty, is a favorite of the three, and they deliver a bright, airy, acoustic-based homage, with Logen and Terry weaving their distinctive voices around Knott’s ethereal lead. Knott also takes the lead on another Petty selection, “Wildflowers" while Logen returns with a rendering of Buffalo Springfield’s “For What it’s Worth,” and leads in the haunting, intimate duet with Knott on P!nk’s mournful “Try.” Terry takes the lead on the late, great Johnny Cash classic "Ring of Fire." which TDC is thrilled to premiere for you today. The rootsy take on the timeless tune is led by Terry's warm and ethereal vocals, a serene acoustic guitar, and Knott and Logen's seamless harmonies creating a rendition beautifully unique, utterly flawless and profoundly sincere. Terry says of the choice to put their stamp on "Ring of Fire," "I’ve always loved playing “Ring of Fire” live. It never gets old for me; truly a timeless classic. It’s a passionate, primal and haunting song, complete with a perfectly sublime melody. It was a blast to record our own version and that's the mark of a truly great song - when it still feels flawless after being stripped down to a simple, organic arrangement. We all have very different voices, but I think there is a special harmony blend that is created when we sing together. That's the kind of thing that can't be planned out or predicted. It feels very natural and effortless to sing with Michael and Lizanne." Enjoy, and share, the song above. Kicking off at DFW hotspot, Magnolia Motor Lounge, his “Lone Star Holiday" trek hits eight cities and includes an opening slot for Reckless Kelly at Antone’s. Christened, “Powerful, lyrically and musically,” by The Rock Father Magazine, the track was co-produced by Reckless Kelly guitarist David Abeyta, who helped Johnny establish a signature sound, one that Glide Magazine dubbed "an eclectic mix of bluesy southern boogie, vintage tones, southern soul, and pure rock ’n’ roll." Pre-order HERE If you are familiar with 500 Miles to Memphis you know that they are a band that rocks but also has country roots in their sound, incorporating instruments that are traditionally associated with country music; lap steel, fiddle, banjo and mandolin. As a matter of fact, singer-songwriter/guitarist (and founder of the band) Ryan Malott chose the band’s name inspired by the distance of his hometown (Bethel, OH) to the town of Memphis, TN, where arguably American roots music was born. 500 Miles to Memphis started out in 2003 and has evolved to the current line-up of Ryan Malott (vocals, guitar, banjo, mandolin); Noah Sugarman (bass, vocals, guitar, pipe organ); Kevin Hogle (drums, percussion, vocals); David Rhodes Brown (lap steel, guitar, vocals); and Aaron Whalen (guitar, vocals). The band has put out 4 albums to date and now their 5th studio album, Blessed Be The Damned, will be released in January 2019. For Blessed Be The Damned, 500 MTM brought in musician and producer, John Pedigo (The O’s, Old 97’s) for production and engineering and Grammy nominated engineer, Adam Pleiman leading the charge with engineering and mastering. “I’ve been an avid fan of John Pedigo since 2003 when he had a band called Slick 57,” recalled Malott. “We were on the phone catching up this past winter when I mentioned our new album. On a whim he offered to produce it and I realized how amazing it would be to share a studio with my musical hero.” Pleiman, who is an accomplished musician himself, was nominated for a Grammy last year for his work with the Collingsworth Family. The band had worked with him while recording their sophomore album, “Sunshine in a Shot Glass” and stayed in touch. “He’s an incredible talent. I can’t say enough about him.” AUSTIN (November 9, 2018) — Robert Earl Keen and Randy Rogers have come clean about their mystery duo The Stryker Brothers in a lengthy feature with Glenn Peoples for Billboard Magazine that ran in print and online. The new indie folk single from Daniel Steinbock moves like a sunbeam after a light drizzle of rain, leaving the earth with a glistening varnish of dew. “Out of Blue” is a soft-hearted, introspective look at enveloping love that is uncontrollably honest and surreal. Combining a lush pallet of vocals dancing with a honeyed melody, the single dances through an open field toward the open, glowing sky. The song shines, despite having been recorded under some very dire circumstances. Featuring backing vocals from fellow Sonoma County residents, Rainbow Girls, the single is the title track off the upcoming album, out February 15.
“Out of Blue” was recorded in the midst of nature’s chaotic might. One night last October, the most destructive wildfire in California history hit Sonoma County in Northern CA, burning down whole neighborhoods in Santa Rosa, Steinbock’s hometown. He explains, “I’d just left town the night before and headed to a studio in the mountains a few hours east. I was planning to spend the week recording, and the Rainbow Girls were coming to add backing vocals on the title track, ‘Out of Blue’. When they showed up that morning, we’d all just gotten the news that our homeland was on fire. We were totally spooked, and had to make a decision weighing the importance of recording versus our fears that our homes were under threat.” In the end, they decided to quickly record “Out of Blue” and the girls rushed back home. “You’d never know any of this listening to the song. You just hear the Rainbow Girls singing their beautiful hearts out — as artists do in the very best and very worst of times." As a whole, Out of Blue rattles in a cage like a bird craving to be set free. Ultimately, it’s a break-up album, but one that tells the whole story. It doesn’t dwell in pain and sorrow, but embraces the whole journey, because to fall out of love means to have experienced the bliss of falling in love, and everything in between. According to Steinbock, the term “out of blue” holds three essential meanings that are explored throughout the album’s love story. One is that of the Big Bang, and the great mystery of primordial creativity appearing out of the void. As an artist, Steinbock also nods at the personal creative process as a whole, and how songs come out of the blue like gifts from the Muse. Lastly, the process of healing which pulls one out of the blue, out of sadness and depression, reborn into the light. These meanings are different ways of connecting with the album. They are stories within the story, much like the human experiences woven throughout the individual years that make up a lifetime. Whether happily in love or coming out of the blue, this record holds every emotion up to the light, revealing its beauty and worth. |
